Custom Made Wooden Indian and Persian Clubs

I searched the country and spoke to many wood turners and specialty shops before finding someone willing and capable to undertake the task of producing quality wooden clubs here in the United States.

Here is a photo of a pair of 20 lb  hickory wooden clubs.  These were made by Revolution Clubs located in Texas.

Their website is www.revolutionclubs.net

I called the owner of Purpleheart Armoury some years back and inquired if he would start making a larger version of wooden clubs for use with the local Persian community here in Los Angeles.  Seems the local Persian decendents themselves were also having problems importing clubs from their native Iran.  I have traveled the United States extensively and have always looked in Middle Eastern Markets for anyone that carries these "Meels" or the heavy version of the clubs.

Since the Middle Eastern Markets seldom have clubs, making them is the only other alternative.  I have had many pairs turned over the years by different woodworkers.  Skillful woodturners are few and far between who can turn large enough stock to produce a 20-30 lb club.  A lot of chips must fly to reveal the club inside the wood.  Matching the weight of the clubs closely is also the job only an expert can produce.

There is nothing like the feel of the natural wooden composition of clubs.  I have swung bats, plastic, and metal and have found that wood breaths and is friendly to the touch.  I have also made clubs of concrete and  in a pinch have made clubs out of galvanized pipe.  None of these materials distributes the weight and balance of a well made pair of wooden clubs.

Some of my Collection

A common misconception of many people getting into the art of swinging is that "bigger is better".  The size and weight of clubs depends on the species of wood used and their density.  Look to the left and you will see four seperate clubs.  These all vary in weight greatly.  The shortest club to the far left is a 20 lb hickory model made by Revolution Clubs.  Second from left is a traditional dark brown stained Meel from Iran and is 17 lbs.  I believe this club is made of Cypress wood.  The third club from the left is made of pine wood and given a pecan stain.  This club is 10 lbs and was made in the USA, but was designed by an older man from Iran in his 80's.  His name is Mustafa and he had this made for the local Palavans to practice at the gym.  The tallest club on the right was made in Iran and imported here to the United States.  This club weighs a little under 10 lbs.

The best constructed club of this group was made by Revolution Clubs here in the United States.  It was constructed from the finest woods, (pecan/hickory) and has been laminated.  That is, the pieces are dried in a kiln and then glued together for added strength.  After many days, they are left to dry and then turned on a large lathe.  The handles run all the way through the entire club, unlike the clubs made in Iran.  Hickory/Pecan wood is used because it is more flexible than other hard woods which allows it to absorb shock.  It is very resiliant and tough which its why it is used to make durable tool handles.  In Iran, a hole is drilled and the handles are often mounted seperately into the clubs body.  Over time and much use, the Persian made clubs handle will become loose and will often seperate from the body.  Revolution Clubs handles are one with the body of the club and they will never separate.

 American Craftsmanship

Here is a photo of an early antique pair of wooden clubs made in the 1900's . To the right of them are a new pair I just received from Revolution Clubs of Texas.

These new clubs have some wonderful but subtle improvements over the older model. All these clubs are marked 3lbs.. The older ones are almost 1/2 lb off that weight and weigh closer to 21/2 lbs. Revolution Clubs are always as close as one can get to the weight marked on the club. Our friends at Revolution Clubs produced the newer model with a slightly thicker neck .This adds strength and compliments the weight shift towards the bottom of the club. This makes for better weight distribution and a smoother swing. The clubs when resting on the floor have a wider base and are less likely to topple over .

The clubs feel wonderful to swing . Even the knob on top of the clubs has been beefed up a bit.

Another added feature is the custom engraving that can be added to any set of clubs . You may want to personalize your clubs so they advertise your gym or organization. You may just simply want your own signature laser etched into the wood for all eternity. Revolution clubs was nice enough to engrave my Ageless Strength logo on my newest pair.

If you are looking for the best made quality wooden clubs on the market I suggest you go to Revolution Clubs .

Please mention ageless strength. If you decide to purchase a 20 lb pair mention this code ARMY09 and receive a 5% discount.
